When a Tree Needs to Come Down — And When It Doesn't

Homeowners usually call about the tree that looks the worst — the one leaning hard toward the house, or the one with a visibly split trunk. Those are worth a look, but the tree that actually comes down more often is the quieter one: dead limbs high in the canopy over a driveway, root damage from grading or construction nearby, or decay at the base that only shows up as a soft spot when you press on it.

A full removal isn't always the answer either. A lot of what looks like a hazard is really a pruning job — deadwood and crossing limbs removed, weight taken off a leaning stem, clearance cut back from the roof and the wires. Removal is for trees that are structurally compromised near the base, badly split, or growing somewhere that makes safe pruning impossible.

What we actually check: root flare condition, trunk soundness, canopy dieback, lean relative to targets (the house, the driveway, the power line), and any history of storm damage. That's a site visit, not a guess from the curb.
