Why New England Patios Heave — and How the Joints Stop It

New England freeze-thaw is hard on any surface that isn't built for it. Water gets into the base under a patio, freezes, expands, and pushes pavers up unevenly — the same reason frost heaves show up in driveways and sidewalks every spring.

The fix starts below the surface: a compacted gravel base deep enough to drain, with a bedding layer that doesn't hold water against the underside of the pavers. Above that, properly swept polymeric joint sand locks the pavers together as a single surface instead of individual tiles that can shift independently.

Skipping either step is invisible on installation day and obvious by the second winter — that's exactly why it gets cut on a low bid. A patio built with the right base and the right joints moves as one piece with the frost instead of fighting it.
